Are cooked mussels safe ONLY if they are open?
Why does alcohol make the opposite sex more attractive?
Why does washing your hands ease your conscience, make it easier to live with hard decisions, and make you more tolerant?
Why does lightning strike the same place twice (and more)?
Do babies get more illnesses when they are 'teething'?
What is the science behind people spontaneously bursting into flames?
And what's more hygienic - an air blower or a paper towel?

Fans of Adam Spencer will love Curious and Curiouser.

Curious and Curiouser Dr Karl Kruszelnicki

I enjoyed this book and the factoid style writing of Dr Karl. I would like to see him write a book aimed for a more adult audience however as it can get a bit dull reading at what seems like a high school level.

Curious and Curiouser Dr Karl Kruszelnicki Reviews

Dr Karl has quite a number of these myth busting or explaining the science and history behind everyday things. This one is a better than a lot but not as good as Great Mythconceptions The Science Behind the Myths and some of his earlier books. With the later books it does seem Dr Karl is struggling to come up with interesting topics as there's a lot of less interesting filler type topics, surrounding the few interesting ones. In Curious & Curiouser the most interesting topics are the origin of Santa Claus (and by default Christmas in European and European origin settled countries). We learn how this Turkish man used to give gifts such as gold to young children so they wouldn't be forced due to poverty to take up a life of prostitution. Dr Karl also debunks the Myth that the modern image of Santa was created by Coca Cola with evidence of the fat bearded coat wearing guy we see today being used well before the date of Coca Cola's advertising. We learn how his name St Nicholas became Sint Nikolass, Sinter Klass and ultimately Santa Claus through the years. You'll also learn about the chimney action which was added in 1809 by an author Washington Irving and that two of the original reindeers were named Dunder and Blixem for years before being changed to Donner and Blitzen in Clement Moore's original Twas the Night Before Christmas poem where Santa's donkey was changed to reindeer. Dr Karl also presents the facts that is it possible for the Christmas Eve delivery of presents around the world. To be honest this been done clearer and better before by others.

You'll also learn why vegetarians who drink beer aren't living a product from animals free diet at all and that they are all drinking isinglass (a product that comes from air bladders of fish used as a clarifying agent). Dr Karl also explains how memories can be manipulated with suggestions and how dangerous it is to rely on memory to convict someone. If Coke really dissolves teeth, do frogs give warts, how snakes move and what's the best way to wash and method to dry your hands.

The rest which are pretty much filler reading but one or two of the topics may be of interest to you. They are, does beer make people more attractive? Should you throw away mussels that don't open when you cook them? Bending spoons, stars, spontaneous human combustion, head lice, are teething babies more likely to get sick? Why people fear Friday the 13th. Are all white cats deaf? The best way to skip stones, does lightning ever strike twice in the one place? Is there really a substance that will turn the water in a pool a different colour is someone urinates in it?
An easy to understand book, for those who love facts explained in simple language. The book also makes you want to do your own research. I look forward to the next book.
